social is the king of social media outlets. 500 million people and counting flock to it to connect, share, learn, inform, and unwind. Whatever your electronic cup of social media tea may be, social has something to satiate you. Live chat, lifestreaming, photos, interactive games, etc, etc. Its diversity and easy platform make it a medium that users young and old ‘like’ (a little social pun there).

And if you pay very close attention to sports teams, news media, as well as small and major corporations, they’re promoting their social and Twitter accounts just as much, if not more, than their actual website.

This is an incredibly smart strategy. Think about it: If 400 million people were at a party, wouldn’t you want to attend as well?

Despite some deeming social a waste of time, the majority of the world remains faithful and continues to cultivate those virtual farms like they did in days of old (only, it was real, not virtual). And thinking about this phenomenon made me comb through my own social News Feed, where I made a bold observation:

There certainly are a lot of messages about lonely, lost brown cows, aren’t there?

Yes, I’m aware you can block the messages out. But go with me on this…

One of the many reasons some companies have deemed social ‘counterproductive’ is because of the countless hours spent tending to crops, giving people cakes, and attempting to virtually live vicariously through Tony Soprano. Many companies have blocked the site completely…thus dismissing a major opportunity to build their brand on the world’s most popular platform.

social is a connectivity tool and continues to be so. But that purpose can get blurred amidst the sponsored games that keep their company running like a locomotive. In an effort to use social as a productive tool, it’s important to look past your friends asking you for wood and nails so they can have a barn-raising next week and focus on the other great applications that can benefit you and your business’s branding efforts.

Facebook’s built-in instant messaging feature is a fantastic way to connect and network with clients, customers, partners, and industry leaders. You can share and gain insight on a variety of topics. In addition, great content can be found and posted in Status Updates. One of your connections may be working on a new business idea and you may be in need of what they’re planning to offer. Strike up a conversation with them and they’ll be more than willing to point you in the right direction.

The ability to generate a lead and, more importantly, a sale, with virtually no money spent or time wasted is a very real possibility with Facebook. Position yourself correctly and provide remarkable value to the social community and you’ll be pleasantly surprised how well-received your message becomes.

social has also become a very popular site for Pay-Per-Click (PPC) advertising, much like Google. The social ads appear in the right-hand column and are targeted towards a user’s profile information, thus putting information in their line of sight that closely relates to their interests. It doesn’t get much more focused than that.

You also have the capability of embedding landing pages and opt-in forms to your profile, which is a tremendous way to provide valuable information to a potential customer or client in exchange for their name and email address.

Finally, the need for Fan Pages, Business Pages, and Community Pages cannot be overlooked for any business, regardless of size. These pages create excellent ways to keep the public up-to-date on news and happenings within your organization, as well as interact with your fans and followers. With the number of users on social continuing to rise and the potential for your message to reach huge audiences, a business cannot afford to be without one, or all, of these pages.

Businesses ‘in the know’ already have a leg-up in the social media game. If you haven’t started utilizing social to your advantage, chances are tremendous your competitors are stealing business from you this very moment! Learn more about the importance of the social media phenomenon and how you can get your social media presence built for you.

Internet Marketing – What No One Tells the Small Online Business Owner

Using social For Business

One of the most popular searches on Google is ‘Using social For Business’ and with good reason. social is a phenomenon that offers new ways to find customers and develop relationships. It can also help to build and reinforce your brand.

In this article I will outline some of the practical steps that you can take if you wish to use social for Business.

use your social Profile – a full-detailed page becomes available once people connect to you and it is your opportunity to create an impression and stamp your personality.
use social Groups – you can set up (or join) a group on any topic. Within groups you have the ability to post text, discussions, photos, videos and links. As the owner of a group you can also send out messages to your members as often as you like. Members of groups can invite others to join and so it possible for a group to grow exponentially in a very short time. With popularity comes spam – so you will have to devote more time to moderating your groups as they grow larger.
social Pages – a social page can include HTML, Flash and social applications. Fans can sign up to your pages (and pass them on to their friends) and you can again send messages. DonâEUR(TM)t do anything naughty though, pages are monitored closely by Facebook!
News Feed and Mini Feed – the News Feed is what you everyone sees on their login page. It is a summary of what’s going in your social world – what your friends are doing, which applications they are installing, which groups they are joining – even simply changing their image, you get to know. The feeds are amongst the most powerful aspects in using social for business. Consider this for a moment. In our viral marketing campaign, we connect with others and when they connect, their connections see the connection through their News Feed. Should some of their friends decide to connect, then their friends see the connection. And the chain reaction goes on.
Groups, Pages and Feeds – the foundation to viral marketing. What many organizations fail to do in trying to use social for business is to apply what Malcolm Gladwell calls ‘The Law of the Few’. There are three types of people who have disproportionate impact on others – connectors (know lots of people), mavens (find new information) and sales people (persuaders). These are the people that you want as fans for your pages and members of your groups. By targeting these people, rather than indiscriminately trying to connect with hundreds of people, your marketing can take on a life of its own. Your marketing will be driven by people who know your target audience and whom your target audience trust. The key principle is that using social for business requires a rifle rather than a shotgun approach. You may be wondering how you get these connectors, mavens and salespeople on your side. The answer is simple – by offering something of value to them. Involve them in pre-launch activities, send them products for testing, ask for their opinions, hold events. You may notice the similarity with classic PR activities. That’s exactly what they are. In the digital, socially-connected world, these people are the new journalists.
social Events – social Events is an interface for promoting … events. You can create a page and invite friends to events through social and receive replies through the system.
Notes and Photos – you can share photos and blog posts and by ‘tagging’ they can appear in your friends’ News Feed. This is not an opportunity for you to broadcast your stock product photos. You need to be creative in everything you do. It is the unusual and different that gets passed on. Bore them and you will be ‘disconnected’.
use social marketing applications such as social Video, social RSS to promote your blog, IEndorse for testimonials and the various applications to connect with business networks such as LinkedIn and Xing.
Marketplace and Networks – in the past heavily spammed and so tread with caution.

Using social For Business – The Key Principles

To summarize, to make the most effective use of social for business you should:

participate by offering valuable and unique input
be proactive and create groups, pages and events
